The International Association of Horticultural Producers (AIPH) met in Dubai on October 29, 2008 and, as a part of their proceedings, created a special committee charged with co-operative activities for the Green City Initiative.
"The Green City philosophy is based on the concept that plants can bring social, economic and environmental benefits. And more. Plants reach right to the very heart of the matter — plants are key to our sense of well being, our sense of belonging to a place, to being at home. They are an antidote to our increasingly disjointed, and rootless lives." www.thegreencity.co.uk/gcabout.asp
The AIPH is an umbrella organization that represents horticultural production organizations from around the world. Their mandate is to stimulate international marketing of ornamental horticulture products and services. Since the organization's founding in Switzerland in 1948 membership has continued to grow, with 26 countries represented in 2006.
By joining the Green City Initiative, AIPH announces its intention and wish to focus world-wide attention on the important economic and social functions and benefits of green space in urban areas. AIPH plans to organize an international symposium on the functional applications of green space in and around cities.
Jan Habets, managing director of Plant Publicity Holland, and founding member of the Green City Initiative will be closely involved with the planning for this symposium.
Mr. Habets will be delivering the keynote address about the current state of Europe's Green City Initiative on January 6 at Congress 2009, Canada's largest annual horticultural trade show and conference, in Toronto, Canada.
